At Pride of Place Living, we’re committed to creating more than just housing; we’re building a community that’s inclusive, supportive, and truly reflective of its residents’ values. On October 10th, we hosted a Resident Interest Group (RIG) Values Workshop, a collaborative session where future residents explored shared values and laid the foundation for a community-led environment.
The RIG’s role is advisory, supporting our PoP and Committee to ensure the development of Pride of Place Living aligns with the needs and aspirations of future residents. Below are the highlights from our workshop and the six core values that emerged to guide us forward.
1. Safety and Security
Creating a safe environment is essential for community wellbeing. Workshop attendees discussed ways to integrate safety into both design and daily life. Suggested actions included regular check-ins, thoughtful space planning for privacy, and conflict mediation tools to foster a sense of security across the community.
2. Accountability, Responsibility, and Compromise
We recognise the importance of shared responsibility and accountability within communal spaces. Interested residents suggested strategies such as regular communication around shared responsibilities, agreeing on maintenance duties, and allowing flexibility when challenges arise. A key takeaway: fostering a culture where everyone feels accountable but supported in their contributions.
3. Kindness and Respect
Our community aims to embrace kindness as a cornerstone. Discussions highlighted the need for open-mindedness, giving each other the benefit of the doubt, and treating every interaction with compassion. From acts of kindness to structured support systems like community time banks, these approaches reflect a commitment to nurturing kindness and mutual respect.
4. Cooperation and Mutual Aid
Cooperation is more than just working together; it’s a spirit we hope to foster in every aspect of Pride of Place Living. Ideas included creating a platform for skill sharing, establishing a lending library for tools and equipment, and setting up shared spaces that encourage collaboration. A garden space was even proposed as a hub for community-building activities.
5. Acceptance
Our residents come from all walks of life, and acceptance is key to making Pride of Place Living feel like home for everyone. We’re working to create safe, supportive spaces where residents can voice their needs and navigate differences without conflict. Regular meetings will give everyone a platform to address any concerns openly, helping us foster a culture of understanding and inclusivity.
6. Direct Communication and Consensus
Effective communication is fundamental to a thriving community. Attendees shared ideas around setting ground rules for respectful interactions, regular reviews of community guidelines, and training on conflict resolution and direct communication. By promoting compassionate candour and supporting open dialogue, we aim to empower everyone to speak openly and collaboratively.
What’s Next?
This workshop was just the beginning. Moving forward, we’ll continue to refine these values and the specific actions attached to each. We’ll also be using regular updates, meetings, and future workshops to ensure these principles are not only established but actively supported in daily life. For those who couldn’t attend, a detailed report of the workshop is available to review.
At Pride of Place Living, we’re building more than just homes. Together, we’re creating a vibrant, values-driven community that truly reflects the needs and aspirations of everyone involved.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this powerful session, and we look forward to seeing how these shared values shape our future.
